The 5 S's: Functions of the Pelvic Floor

The pelvic floor is (thankfully!) getting *more* attention. But we can always do better. Sometimes, when words become more widely spoken, we hear them without complete understanding. So we’re here today to help inform you of the general functions of the pelvic floor. If you have any concerns related to these functions, we’re here to help! Click on the link in our bio to schedule a free consult!

Functions of the pelvic floor are critical for bowel, bladder, and sexual function. They functions can be summed up in the “5 S’s”

  • Support (for internal organs)

  • Sphincteric (urethra, vagina, and anus)

  • Sexual (relaxes for penetration and contracts for orgasm)

  • Stability (fixes the trunk with extremity movements)

  • Sump Pump (for the circulatory system to get lymphatic fluid from the legs back to the heart)

But don’t forget – posture and breathing!!

The pelvic floor supports the pelvis structure, the organs within the pelvis, and it works in conjunction with the respiratory diaphragm, the abdominal muscles and the back to create central stability.

When and how does the pelvic floor work? Always!! 70% of the muscle fibers in the pelvic floor muscles are “slow twitch” which means they are always on!

Do you know how to activate your pelvic floor muscles? Some require coaching to connect with and activate the pelvic floor. About 30-40% need cueing – you aren’t alone if you’re struggling to understand your body! We have strategies to help you learn about your body!

How much strength training is enough? It depends! A skilled physical therapist with additional pelvic floor training can help create an individualized plan according to your needs.

If you are having difficulty in regards to any of the many functions of the pelvic floor, please reach out for education and empowerment. Often, improvement can be seen immediately! We’re here to help! Come visit us on Wednesdays at the Eastern Shore Healing Arts Center! Schedule online here.
