Tummy Time Tips!
Does your baby hate tummy time?....Here are some techniques or positions to improve tolerance to being on their belly!
Baby superman hold: Cradle baby over your bicep/forearm with them on their belly. Make sure to give as much head and neck support as needed depending on the age of your baby. Depending on your baby’s age and tolerance, they may be able to lift and hold their head for seconds or minutes. If you are unsure on what is developmentally appropriate for their age, you may consult with your pediatrician or physical therapist.
Sit in a reclined position with baby on their belly, on your chest/belly. This still gives baby the wanted skin contact with you and they have to look up to engage with their likely favorite person…you!
Lay baby over an inflatable exercise ball, giving lots of support at their waist and trunk. You can control how flat they get by rolling the ball back and forth. There is no need to roll them any far further (head towards the ground) than when their back is perpendicular to the ceiling. Depending on your baby’s age, you may also try gently stroking down their back to encourage trunk extension. An added bonus may be having a mirror in front of them as baby’s love watching themselves!
